As a mother of two “natural babies,” I founded i play., Inc. in 1982 based on values that prioritize protecting our children and the Earth. My oldest daughter, Emi, is now working at i play. as we continue to develop the company using these principles.
As the number of health, safety and sustainability issues grows, protecting our children and the Earth becomes more complex. As responsible parents, we must educate ourselves about what is best for our babies, which includes finding responsible companies whose values align with our own.
Your baby’s health comes first. We are committed to continually learning about product materials and potential health and safety issues concerning these materials. In 2003 we learned the phthalates in PolyVinyl Cloride (PVC) found in many waterproof materials were potentially harmful to young children so we removed all PVC from our products. In 2006 we learned about similar concerns over BisPhenol-A (BPA) found in PolyCarbonate (PC) water bottles and removed all BPA from our products. Parents today have to filter through a lot of information about potentially harmful substances to make healthy choices, and making sustainable choices is equally as complicated.
Because of this complexity, we believe want options so they can make decisions based on their needs. Some choices we offer include materials that encourage healthy development from the inside and the outside:

Inside
• Natural, non-petroleum materials such as glass stainless steel and wood
• Non-petroleum materials such as silicone and
vegetable starch
• BPA-free plastics such as PolyPropylene (PP)

Outside
• Organic cotton
• Natural fibers such as cotton, wool, ramie and
plant-based non-wovens
• Recycled polymer fibers such as EcoFleece
• PVC-free waterproof materials such as EVA and
polyurethane coated polyesters and nylon

Our products undergo extensive testing and conform to all US ASTM, FDA and CPSIA standards. We believe it is a company’s responsibility to monitor the quality and safety of their products. We manufacture in Asheville, NC and work with small factories in China, Thailand, Korea and Taiwan. We adhere to fair labor and environmentally-responsible standards.
We know that parents’ needs for their children are varied, so we’re always looking for ways to make parenting easier and more fun. That is why we make, baby-friendly
i play.® and green sprouts® products for little ones.
