Meet SARAH YERKEY, an i play.er on our sales team! You may recognize her as the face and voice behind our i play. and green sprouts videos, or, locally, you may know her as Asheville’s first Mardis Gras Queen. Sarah, pictured below with her hubby, Scott, (Asheville’s first Mardi Gras King), has a little girl on the way in February or possibly even sooner.

When is your due date? Are you having a boy or a girl? My due date is February 4th however, because I have placenta previa, my little girl may have to arrive a little sooner than expected via a planned cesarean. This was such a scary thought to me at first. Now that the idea has had time to settle I am more excited than ever to possibly meet her a little early!

Are you ready to share the name? No – we really want to see little peanut’s face before we name her for life. My husband, Scott, and I come from very different genetic backgrounds and she could look like anyone in our long line! Some names may be better suited for a little girl with a head full of dark hair and others for a fairer little lady. We did do a lot of name research though. We looked at old family names and top 10, 20, even 100 lists dating back to the 1900s to see if anything caught our ears. We ended up narrowing our list based on our love for the names and testing them out by saying them over and over again – after all that’s what we’ll be doing when she arrives!

Have you had any strange food cravings in your pregnancy? Sweet potatoes and orange juice (maybe not at the same time, but, now that I write it, a smoothie with the two blended together sounds fantastic!) I also got really into sweets, which is not the healthiest thing I could have picked up. I never really cared for them before, but during my second trimester, I couldn’t get enough!

What are you most excited about with your new arrival? Meeting the product of my husband and myself. Seeing how she will grow from our love and what kind of personality she will have,  in addition to what she takes from Scott and I.

What are you most nervous about? Breastfeeding

What have you been most surprised by in your pregnancy? I’m most surprised by how much I have grown (and not just in my belly!) This little girl and all of the surprises and challenges that she has already brought have led to personal growth for me. I have learned to let go of the feeling that I have to control everything. I have learned that having children is a natural, organic process and that I don’t have to read every book written to be a “good mom.” I have learned to take everything that comes at me slowly and one day at a time.

What foods/dishes would you most appreciate from your  friends and family to get you through the first few weeks of having a newborn?

Breakfast

Frittata’s (those can freeze! ;-) )

Smoothies made of Greek yogurt, fruits and veggies

Herbal teas for postpartum aid

Lunch

Soups – it will be winter after all

Kale salads (no cheeses please)

One-dish easy to re-heat casseroles full of root veggies and healthy protein

Dinner

Same as lunch is good by me!

What are your top three must-have recommendations for other moms, from i play. and green sprouts?

i play.

1. Ultimate Swim Diaper

2. Mid-weight rain coat (w/ cute, matching accessories)

3. Nursery organizers

green sprouts

1. Drip drop bibs

2.Bottle Starter Set

3. Sili paw teether 2 pack

What kind of baby shower did you have? What theme, etc.? In my hometown I had a very cute, non-pink, animal themed shower. Here in Asheville, I had a co-ed, welcome to the world, onesie decorating party. It was nice to share both showers with my husband, family and dear friends.

Aside from iplay. and green sprouts, which you obviously love, what was the favorite gift you received at your shower? The rocking chair that my husband was rocked in when he was a baby.

Let’s talk about *you* for a minute! If you could have anything for Christmas, what would it be? A day or two off with Scott to just focus on us and pamper ourselves.

Breastfeeding isn’t so bad…it’s pretty special bonding time <3 If you end up struggling please seek help from a lactation consultant….best thing I ever did!

Thank you Rachel K! I’m feeling more confident everyday. My husband and I have taken classes together and the support network here in Asheville is top notch! Our breastfeeding center is always available and lactation consultants are everywhere. We’re really getting excited for the new bundle of joy!

I can’t wait to meet our little Snaugletta, either and can’t wait to hug both of my girls and Scott! Love you!!

  4. Veronica Reichman says:

Congratulations, Sarah & Scott! We didn’t finalize our baby’s name until he was born either. Breastfeeding can be a challenge at first but I really started to enjoy it once both baby and I got the hang of it. It is amazing to know that you are providing the only nutrition your baby needs! The sweet bonding time together is special. Yes, it can be inconvenient, painful and monotonous at times but it is well worth the reward. Best of luck!

  8. Ivonna Freeman says:

I felt the same way with breastfeeding but everything will be just fine stay positive. Good luck and congrats.

    Liked, shared, enter me please!

My tip is if you plan to breastfeed, do it on demand! Don’t try to schedule your baby. Just follow their lead! I didn’t with our first and my milk dried up at 6 months. With our 2nd, 3rd, and now 4th, I let the baby lead and feed them whenever and wherever they are hungry! Had successful breastfeeding with all of them now! (2nd till 18 months, 3rd till 13 months, and 4th currently still exclusively bfing at 6 months!)

    Good luck! And congrats!

  10. Trista Morrison says:

Csections are not bad. My best advice is to drink lots of water after and request just the lil ice chunks. They were awesome! All once the numbness goes away try to walk when you can. I had my csection at 1015 and was up by 2000 walking.

Best of luck and stay positive! :)

  11. Katie L says:

    best of luck with baby

  12. Maureen Modic says:

Enjoy everything…even when it gets tough, b.c it goes by too quickly! Things will be hard for a while, but it does calm down and get much easier! :)

  13. Jaime says:

I liked the photo on Facebook. :)

  14. Jaime says:

Best advice I can offer – especially after a c-section (mine was an unplanned c-section) – when someone offers help, take it. For the first two weeks, take all of the help that is offered to you. Sometimes I wish I had that help….and it’s been over 15 months!

  15. Holly Marie says:

Congrats!!! Sleep while you can and take plenty of pictures the first couple of weeks- lack of sleep means lack of memory sometimes : )

  16. Amber W says:

Congratulations! I wish you the best with delivery and your precious baby!

  17. Rachel says:

My wee one is now 7 months old & cutting a few teeth! She was & is such a sweet blessing. I was only able to nurse for 4 months, and after getting help from many people,my thyroid was the culprit. We were given a bit of donor milk and she’s done great! Her name is Fiona Rose – my husband is Irish and I love Roses. :-) We knew she was a girl from the start. I couldn’t eat meats of any kind, and craved fruits & veggies… the same ones she loves now! Take lots of photos, and ask your girlfriends for help…. doing dishes, vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom – it’s a great thing when you have help. Love & Congrats to you!
